About Washio

Washio was an on-demand laundry and dry-cleaning delivery service founded in March 2013 by Jordan Metzner, Juan Dulanto, and Bob Wall. Metzner and Dulanto had prior entrepreneurial experience in the restaurant and juice bar industries in Argentina, where they met. The venture was established to address a perceived lack of online presence and efficiency in the traditional laundry sector. Operating on a mobile-first platform, customers could schedule pick-up and delivery of their laundry and dry cleaning via an app, with a promised 24-hour turnaround.

The company operated as a logistics and technology intermediary, outsourcing the actual cleaning process to local, third-party laundry facilities. Its direct employees, referred to as "ninjas," were responsible for picking up and delivering the clothes within specified time windows. Washio's business model was part of the growing "Uber for X" trend, capitalizing on consumer demand for convenience, particularly among millennials. Revenue was generated through per-pound charges for wash-and-fold services, itemized pricing for dry cleaning, and a delivery fee, with a minimum order requirement.

Washio attracted significant investor interest, raising a total of approximately $17 million from investors including Canaan Partners, A-Grade Investments, and celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Nas. The company expanded its services from its initial Los Angeles market to operate in six major U.S. cities, including Chicago, Boston, and Washington D.C. At its peak, Washio processed hundreds of thousands of orders, cleaning over a million items of clothing. Despite its initial growth and revenue generation, the company faced challenges with its business model. The low margins inherent in the laundry industry, coupled with the high operational costs of on-demand logistics and outsourcing cleaning, made profitability difficult to achieve. After attempts to find a buyer were unsuccessful, Washio ceased operations on August 30, 2016, with its assets later being acquired by competitor Rinse.
