Wartsila
Lifecycle power solutions for marine and energy markets.
About Wartsila
What powers massive container ships across oceans and keeps the lights on for entire cities? For nearly two centuries, the answer has often involved Wärtsilä. This Finnish powerhouse is a global leader in technologies and services for the marine and energy markets, playing a critical role in global trade and the transition to a sustainable energy future. The company’s story begins in 1834 with the approval to build a sawmill in the Finnish municipality of Tohmajärvi. Industrialist Nils Ludvig Arppe soon took over, expanding it into an ironworks. The firm was renamed Wärtsilä Ab in 1898. A pivotal moment came in the 1930s when, under the leadership of President Wilhelm Wahlforss, the company was saved from bankruptcy and began its transformation into a major industrial conglomerate by acquiring shipyards and engineering works. This expansion led Wärtsilä into the marine industry and, crucially, into engine manufacturing. After signing a licensing agreement in 1938, Wärtsilä produced its first diesel engine in 1942. By 1959, it was designing its own. Over the following decades, Wärtsilä honed its focus on engines through strategic acquisitions, including NOHAB, Sulzer Diesel, and Hamworthy, while exiting the shipbuilding business it had once dominated. Today, Wärtsilä stands at the forefront of the decarbonization movement in its core industries. The company is a leader in developing engines and power plants that can run on sustainable fuels like ammonia and hydrogen, as well as providing advanced energy storage solutions. With a vast installed base and a robust service business, Wärtsilä is not just powering the present; it's engineering the path to a carbon-neutral future.
