About Wadi

Wadi.com entered the Middle Eastern e-commerce sector in 2015, established by founders Pratik Gupta, Ankit Wadhwa, and Kanwal Sarfraz. The company was initially launched by the Middle East Internet Group (MEIG), a joint venture between German internet company Rocket Internet and South African telecommunications provider MTN. The founding team brought diverse and relevant experience; Gupta was part of the founding team at Jabong, while Wadhwa and Sarfraz were both former McKinsey consultants with experience in the Middle East. Sarfraz, an economics graduate from LUMS with an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, also had experience at Unilever and Gallup Pakistan. Wadhwa is a graduate of IIT Delhi with an MBA from the Wharton School.

Operating as a horizontal marketplace, Wadi.com initially focused on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia (KSA), offering a wide assortment of products across categories like electronics, fashion, and home goods from over 2,000 international brands. The business model centered on connecting consumers with third-party vendors, with a significant portion of revenue generated from its own stocked inventory. To support its operations, the company established a robust logistics network with its own delivery fleet and warehouses in both the UAE and KSA, servicing over 25 cities. Ten months after its launch, Wadi.com secured a landmark $67 million Series A funding round in February 2016, led by Al Tayyar Travel Group, which was reported as the largest of its kind in the region's tech history at the time. This capital was aimed at scaling operations and enhancing last-mile delivery capabilities.

In 2018, the company pivoted its strategy to focus on the online grocery delivery market in Saudi Arabia. This shift was followed by a $30 million Series B investment from Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), a major regional conglomerate that operates Carrefour hypermarkets in the region. This made MAF a strategic partner for both food and non-food groceries. By early 2019, Wadi.com had completely shut down its general marketplace to dedicate its resources to the grocery segment in KSA, operating in cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. Ultimately, in May 2019, Majid Al Futtaim fully acquired Wadi.com, absorbing its grocery delivery platform. Following the acquisition, the founding team transitioned out of the company.
