In the early 2000s, the European airline industry was being reshaped by the low-cost model. In Spain, a team saw an opportunity. In 2004, Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros launched Vueling Airlines, aiming to bring a fresh, efficient, low-cost carrier to the Spanish market. Their initial strategy was simple: offer low fares, fly to primary airports, and build a strong brand identity. The airline began operations with just two Airbus A320 aircraft, flying from Barcelona to four destinations. Vueling's growth was rapid, and it went public with an IPO on the Spanish stock exchanges in December 2006. However, the increasingly competitive low-cost market led to financial pressures. A key rival, Clickair, backed by Spanish flag carrier Iberia, emerged, creating intense competition. This rivalry led to a pivotal moment for both companies. In 2008, Vueling and Clickair announced their intention to merge, a move designed to create a more financially stable and competitive entity. The merger was completed in 2009, with Vueling as the surviving brand. This consolidation caught the attention of the wider European aviation industry. International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, saw the value in Vueling's strong position in the low-cost market. In 2013, IAG acquired control of Vueling, integrating the Spanish carrier into its portfolio of airlines. This acquisition provided Vueling with significant financial backing and operational synergies, allowing it to continue its expansion across Europe while maintaining its distinct brand as a low-cost carrier.
