VoxelSensors

VoxelSensors is a deep-tech semiconductor company founded in March 2020 that develops 3D perception technology for extended reality (XR) and mobile devices. Based in Brussels, Belgium, the company was established by Andre Miodezky, Johannes Peeters, Frederic de Laminne de Bex, and Ward van der Tempel. The founding team are industry veterans with over 50 years of combined experience in 3D sensor technologies, including a previous venture, SoftKinetic, which was acquired by Sony in 2015.

VoxelSensors aims to seamlessly blend the physical and digital worlds through its proprietary and patented Switching Pixels® Active Event Sensor (SPAES) technology. This technology represents a new category of efficient 3D perception systems that deliver ultra-low power consumption and ultra-low latency. SPAES functions as a single photon active event sensor, capable of capturing a new voxel (a 3D pixel) with fewer than 10 photons, which is significantly more efficient than traditional methods. The technology is designed to solve critical challenges for XR device manufacturers by providing a solution that consumes less than 10 milliwatts of power with a latency of less than 5 milliseconds, while being resistant to outdoor lighting and immune to crosstalk from other optical systems.

The company's business model centers on the design, development, and sale of its SPAES sensors and integrated solutions like the PERCEPT inference module. These products target clients in the consumer electronics and enterprise sectors, specifically manufacturers of AR/VR/MR wearables, smartphones, robotics, drones, and automotive systems. VoxelSensors' technology enables "Spatial and Empathic Computing," which allows devices to understand their environment and user intentions in real-time. This is achieved by gathering contextual data through spatial awareness and eye-tracking to create personalized and predictive AI experiences. The company has developed evaluation kits, such as Andromeda 1 and Andromeda 2, to allow customers to integrate its technology.

VoxelSensors has secured significant funding to support its growth, with its seed round totaling €9.5 million. The company has received investments from firms including Capricorn Partners, Qbic Fund, and SFPIM Relaunch. In April 2024, VoxelSensors acquired key intellectual property and expertise from the Israeli company EyeWay Vision, enhancing its capabilities in gaze-tracking and wearable device architectures. The company is also collaborating with Qualcomm to optimize its sensing technology for Snapdragon XR platforms.
