About Voodin Blade Technology

Voodin Blade Technology is a German startup founded in 2021 by CEO Tom Siekmann, CFO Jorge Castillo Rodríguez, and Chief Automation Manager Gustavo Lasierra Ferrer, focused on enhancing the sustainability of the wind energy sector. The company manufactures fully recyclable wind turbine blades from laminated veneer lumber (LVL), a strong, engineered wood product made from thin layers of wood. This approach addresses the significant environmental problem of blade waste, as conventional fiberglass and carbon fiber blades are difficult and expensive to recycle, often ending up in landfills.

The company's manufacturing process uses automated computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines, which eliminates the need for expensive molds used in traditional blade production. This mould-independent process allows for greater flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency, with Voodin claiming it can reduce blade production costs by up to 20% and CO2 emissions by 78%. The technology is compatible with any wind turbine, serving both new installations and the retrofit market for older turbines whose original blades are no longer produced.

In early 2024, Voodin successfully installed its first prototype, a 19.3-meter wooden blade, on an existing wind turbine in Breuna, Germany. The company has conducted extensive lab tests demonstrating that its LVL blades have superior durability and fatigue characteristics compared to fiberglass blades. Following the prototype's success, Voodin is developing larger 60-meter and 80-meter blades. The firm has entered into strategic partnerships, including with material supplier Stora Enso and turbine manufacturer Senvion India, to develop and scale its technology. In late 2024, ENREGO Energy acquired a stake in the company to act as a global partner for growth and financing.
