About Vivax

Vivax emerged as a significant player in the Brazilian telecommunications landscape, establishing itself as the nation's second-largest provider of cable television and broadband services before its acquisition. The company was founded in 1995 by Christopher Paul Torto, an American entrepreneur with a long-standing presence in Brazil, who also served as its Chief Executive Officer. Torto, a Harvard MBA graduate, leveraged his business acumen to identify and capitalize on underserved markets. The company's strategic focus was to penetrate economically viable cities, primarily within the state of São Paulo, that were not the primary focus of larger telecommunication incumbents.

Vivax's core business encompassed a suite of services including cable television, broadband internet, and wholesale carrier services. This multi-service model allowed the company to build a substantial subscriber base, counting over 320,000 video subscribers and 130,000 data subscribers across 31 cities at one point. The company's operations were backed by significant investment, having raised $209 million with support from private equity firms such as Great Hill Partners and Spire Capital. Another key figure in the company's structure was Fernando Norbert, who was a major shareholder through the controlling entity BTVC.

A major milestone in Vivax's history was its initial public offering on the Bovespa stock exchange in 2006, a testament to its growth and market position. This event was shortly followed by a strategic acquisition agreement announced in October 2006, with Net Serviços de Comunicação, the country's largest cable operator. The acquisition was a multi-stage process, approved by the Brazilian telecommunications agency Anatel in May 2007, which led to Vivax becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Net Serviços. Following the integration, the Vivax brand was gradually phased out and replaced by Net's offerings, marking the end of its journey as an independent entity.
