VIRxSYS
Biotechnology company employing proprietary platform technologies to develop therapies for serious human diseases
About VIRxSYS
VIRxSYS Corporation, founded in 1998, operated as a private biotechnology firm with a focus on developing novel therapies for significant human diseases. The company was headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Its core business revolved around two proprietary technology platforms: lentiviral vectors for gene delivery and Spliceosome Mediated RNA Trans-splicing (SMaRT™) for gene repair. The company's initial lentiviral delivery technology was exclusively licensed from The Johns Hopkins University.
The company's primary strategy was to leverage these platforms to create treatments for diseases like HIV and other genetic conditions. One of its leading candidates was VRX496, a gene therapy for HIV. This therapy involved genetically modifying a patient's own T-cells with a disabled version of the HIV virus, engineered to inhibit the replication of the pathogenic virus. These modified, HIV-resistant T-cells were then multiplied and administered back to the patient. VIRxSYS advanced this program to Phase II human clinical trials to evaluate its safety and efficacy. In 2006, the company secured $20 million in a series G financing round to support this Phase II trial. By 2011, VIRxSYS had significantly expanded its intellectual property, holding numerous U.S. patents for its lentiviral vector and SMaRT platforms.
In addition to its HIV program, VIRxSYS was developing other therapeutic candidates. VRX1273 was a lentiviral vector-based therapeutic vaccine for HIV, and VRX1243 was an RNA-based therapy using the SMaRT technology to address apoA-I deficiencies, which are linked to atherosclerosis. The company engaged in clinical trials to assess its treatments, including studies for VRX496 that began as early as 2005. Boro Dropulic, a founder of VIRxSYS, served as its Chief Scientific Officer and led the first-ever human clinical trial of a lentiviral vector. While the company was a notable player in the gene therapy space, it appears to have become defunct, as indicated by a list of sold, merged, or bankrupt biotech companies.
