In 1976, long before software was a common sight on a construction site, Viewpoint was founded in Portland, Oregon. The founders identified a critical problem: the construction industry relied on fragmented, manual processes for nearly everything, from accounting to project management. Viewpoint's initial vision was to create integrated software solutions specifically for contractors to solve these inefficiencies. Over the next four decades, the company grew by focusing intensely on the needs of the construction world. It developed a suite of products that connected the back office's financial and resource planning with the real-time operations happening in the field. This approach allowed contractors to manage projects, financials, and jobsite operations all within a single system, improving profitability and productivity. A major chapter in the company’s story unfolded in April 2018, when Trimble, a major player in industrial technology, announced it would acquire Viewpoint for $1.2 billion in an all-cash deal. At the time, this was the largest-ever acquisition for a Portland-based tech company. The acquisition was a strategic move for Trimble, combining Viewpoint's strength in contractor-focused software with its own solutions, ultimately creating a more complete offering for the entire construction lifecycle. Today, as part of Trimble, Viewpoint continues its mission to digitally transform the construction industry.
