Victory Pharma
Pharmaceutical products developer for pain and related conditions
About Victory Pharma
Victory Pharma, Inc. was a specialty pharmaceutical company headquartered in San Diego, California, founded in 2003. The company, led by President and CEO Matt Heck, focused on acquiring, developing, and marketing prescription pharmaceutical products for the treatment of pain and related conditions. Its client base consisted of healthcare professionals, including pain management specialists, rheumatologists, orthopedic surgeons, and primary care physicians, to whom it marketed through a dedicated sales force.
The company's business model centered on acquiring and commercializing late-stage or already-marketed therapeutic products. Its portfolio included pain management drugs such as Naprelan, Xodol, Fexmid, and Dolgic. In a strategic expansion in August 2010, Victory Pharma acquired the assets of MiddleBrook Pharmaceuticals, adding anti-infective products MOXATAG® and KEFLEX®, along with the PULSYS® drug delivery technology platform, to its offerings.
In March 2009, Victory Pharma secured $45 million in an equity financing round led by Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, with participation from existing investor Ampersand Ventures. An acquisition by Sciele Pharma for $150 million was announced in May 2009 but was terminated two months later. The company was ultimately acquired by Shionogi & Co. in 2011 for $118 million. In December 2012, Victory Pharma agreed to a settlement of $11.4 million to resolve federal civil and criminal liability related to allegations of promoting its drugs by providing illegal kickbacks to doctors.
