About Vicarius Pharma

Vicarius Pharma AG launched in August 2017 as a specialized partner for U.S.-based biopharmaceutical companies aiming to commercialize assets in European markets. Founded in 2016 by Hans Peter Hasler, the company was established to offer a novel market entry strategy. Hasler, serving as CEO, brought extensive experience from his previous roles as COO at both Biogen and Elan Corp. His background, along with frustrations shared with James Mullen, former CEO of Biogen, about the complexities of European launches, directly shaped Vicarius's business model. Mullen supported the company as an investor and the executive chairman of the board.

The firm's core business was to act as the go-to-market organization in Europe for its partners, thereby bridging the gap between a costly go-it-alone strategy and a traditional out-licensing deal. Vicarius would build a dedicated, customer-facing organization and commercialize a product in the innovator's name, absorbing all initial launch costs. This model was designed to allow U.S. companies to retain strategic control over their assets and research, with the flexibility to recover the asset and the organization built by Vicarius at any time. The company's value proposition hinged on a value-sharing principle, with projected returns for partners expected to be 1.5 to 2 times greater than through conventional partnering strategies.

Vicarius provided comprehensive services including strategic advice on European regulatory processes, pricing, and commercial strategy. It held the marketing authorization and took on all legal and operational responsibilities for the asset in Europe. The business model was particularly focused on companies with specialty, rare disease, and hospital products. The company secured CHF 21 million (approximately $21.8 million) in a Series A financing round from private investors in August 2017 to fund its initial operations and sign its first clients. Despite its promising start, corporate records indicate that Vicarius Pharma ceased operations, with a bankruptcy liquidation event occurring in July 2020.
