The company's founders, Mark Dignum (CTO) and David Lawson (CRO), have extensive backgrounds in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. They were part of the team responsible for developing e-VOKE, the first medically approved electronic cigarette. Dignum, a chemist by training and a qualified person in the European pharmaceutical industry, was instrumental in setting up a world-class manufacturing site for electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Lawson, a biochemist with an MBA, led the development of e-VOKE and established a regulatory consultancy.
Ventus Medical's primary business involves the research, development, and commercialization of medical devices. The company's current flagship product in development is ENHALE™, a next-generation nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product. In May 2024, Ventus Medical submitted a UK Marketing Authorisation Application for ENHALE™, which is designed as a safer alternative to smoking and vaping. The device uses a proprietary low-temperature vaporization technology to deliver nicotine without the harmful byproducts associated with combustion or higher-temperature vaping products. It is CE marked as a medical device in the EU and is undergoing regulatory review in the UK and Europe.
Historically, Ventus Medical also developed and marketed Provent® Therapy, a non-invasive, disposable device for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This device utilized nasal expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) through a proprietary MicroValve technology to keep a patient's airway open during sleep. Provent received FDA clearance and was available in several countries before being discontinued in December 2020.
