About Velico Medical

Velico Medical, Inc. is a clinical-stage medical technology company focused on reducing preventable deaths from bleeding. Founded in 1992 as ZymeQuest, the company initially explored the development of universally transfusable blood. Over its history, Velico has built a substantial patent portfolio around blood-based technologies. The current strategic direction, led by President and CEO Richard Meehan, is centered on a proprietary spray-drying system for human plasma. This initiative has been significantly supported by contracts from the U.S. government's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

The company's core product under development is the FrontlineODP™ system, which converts liquid plasma into a stable, dry powder. This process is designed to overcome the logistical challenges of frozen plasma, which requires a stringent cold chain for storage and transport. The resulting powdered plasma can be stored at ambient temperatures for up to two years, is lightweight, and can be reconstituted with sterile water in approximately 2.5 minutes at the point of care. This capability is critical for pre-hospital settings such as ground and air ambulances, rural hospitals, and military battlefield applications, where immediate access to plasma can be lifesaving.

Velico's business model targets equipping regional blood centers globally with the FrontlineODP™ manufacturing system. This decentralized production model leverages the existing infrastructure of blood centers, including their donor networks and supply chains, to create local and national self-sufficiency in plasma supply. To facilitate this, Velico has partnered with firms like CRS Pharma to develop containerized laboratory Pods that house the production equipment. The company collaborates extensively with civilian, government, and military blood center leadership, trauma surgeons, and first responders to advance its technology. As an investigational device, FrontlineODP™ is progressing through clinical trials, having completed a Phase I first-in-human safety study in 2025. Velico is also pursuing regulatory approvals in the U.S. (FDA) and Europe (CE).
