VectorY Therapeutics

Biotech & Life Sciences · Amsterdam, Netherlands · Founded 2020

VectorY Therapeutics is a biotechnology company developing one-time, disease-modifying treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. The company was founded in August 2020 and is based in the Amsterdam Science Park. Key co-founders include the venture capital firm Forbion and Dr. Sander van Deventer, a seasoned entrepreneur in drug development who played a pivotal role in the commercialization of Remicade, the first monoclonal antibody, and Glybera, the first approved gene therapy in the Western world. Other co-founders with deep expertise in gene therapy and manufacturing include Carlo Incerti, Pavlina Konstantinova, Anthony Newcombe, and Barbara Sanders. The company's core focus is a platform that combines the precision of antibodies with the long-lasting effects of gene therapy. This is achieved by using a safe adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver the genetic code for therapeutic antibodies directly into target cells, a technique known as vectorized antibodies. This approach aims to overcome the limitations of traditional antibody therapies, particularly in reaching targets within the central nervous system. VectorY operates a fully integrated business model, with in-house capabilities spanning from research and development to its own GMP-certified manufacturing facilities designed for scalable production up to 2000L. VectorY has built a pipeline targeting severe neurodegenerative diseases. Its lead program, VTx-002, is a vectorized antibody targeting the TDP-43 protein, which is implicated in up to 97% of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) cases. The FDA has granted Fast Track designation for VTx-002, and a Phase 1/2 clinical trial was planned to start in early 2026. Other pipeline candidates include treatments for Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). To enhance its delivery technology, VectorY has entered into agreements, such as one with Shape Therapeutics, to use advanced AAV capsids designed for better penetration into the brain with intravenous delivery. The company's launch was supported by seed funding from Forbion in 2021. A significant milestone was achieved in November 2023, when VectorY secured a €129 million ($138 million) Series A financing round. This round was co-led by EQT Life Sciences and Forbion Growth Opportunities Fund, with participation from MRL Ventures Fund (Merck's venture arm), the ALS Investment Fund, and others, positioning it as one of Europe's largest private biotech financings of the year. In late 2024, Jim Scibetta, an executive with extensive experience in building biotech companies, was appointed CEO to steer the company into its clinical stages, while co-founder Sander van Deventer transitioned to President of R&D.
