About Urturn
Urturn was a social media platform focused on user-generated content and creative self-expression, initially launched as Webdoc in early 2011 by Swiss brothers Stelio and Alexandre Tzonis. After securing initial funding from family and friends, the company rebranded to Urturn in January 2013, capturing a primary audience of teens and young adults, particularly females, in the U.S. and UK.

The platform enabled users to create and share engaging content by customizing media like photos and videos with a variety of templates. This model proved highly effective for fan engagement, attracting major music artists such as David Bowie, Pharrell Williams, and One Direction, who used the service to connect with their fanbases. The content was sharable on Urturn as well as other major platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
In May 2013, coinciding with the launch of its iPhone app, Urturn announced a significant Series A funding round of $13.4 million. The investment was led by Balderton Capital, which contributed $10.7 million, alongside a $2.7 million investment from the private equity arm of Debiopharm Group. At the time, CEO Stelio Tzonis stated the capital would be used to build out an API, allowing third-party developers to create their own expression templates, and to expand onto other platforms like Android. The company operated from its headquarters in London's 'Silicon Roundabout' and had an office in Silicon Valley, employing up to 25 people.
The business model was designed to generate revenue through affiliate deals for music and other products, as well as through partnerships with brands. Urturn successfully ran campaigns for major clients like Pepsi, Kellogg’s, and Disney. Despite its early traction and substantial funding, development on the social network ceased in December 2014, and the platform was shut down completely in early 2015.
