Uplink, operating as Hype Labs Inc., is a New York-based firm focused on creating a decentralized telecommunications network by tokenizing connectivity. The company was co-founded by CEO Carlos Lei Santos and CTO André Francisco. The journey began in 2015 as HypeLabs, initially concentrating on software-based mesh networking solutions that enabled device communication without internet access. This early work on connectivity tools led the founders to pivot towards a decentralized, distributed ecosystem, rebranding to Uplink in 2020 to better reflect its new mission.

The firm operates in the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) market, which is projected to become a multi-trillion dollar industry. Uplink's business model centers on a platform that allows individuals and enterprises to share their existing Wi-Fi connectivity or deploy new infrastructure. In return for providing network coverage, these contributors, or "Uplinkers," are rewarded with the network's native utility token, ULX. This model aims to reduce capital and operational expenditures for traditional telecom companies by allowing them to offload traffic onto the Uplink network, while also lowering internet costs for end-users. The company's revenue is generated from this decentralized marketplace for internet connectivity, which utilizes a dual system of on-platform Network Credits (NCs) for service access and ULX tokens for rewarding contributions and ecosystem growth.

Uplink's core service is a DePIN platform that aggregates existing and new internet infrastructure into a unified, global wireless network. By integrating with standard Wi-Fi routers and other hardware, the platform allows anyone to become a connectivity provider. The system is designed to intelligently match network supply with demand, incentivizing deployment in underserved areas and improving reliability and affordability. A key differentiator is its software-first, enterprise-grade approach, which includes being IDP and ANP certified through a partnership with the Wireless Broadband Alliance, providing access to over 3 million access points to bootstrap the ecosystem. The ULX token, which will be built on the Avalanche L1 blockchain, is central to the ecosystem, facilitating transactions, staking for governance, and incentivizing network participation and validation.
