About UNOMI

Apache Unomi is an open-source Customer Data Platform (CDP) operating under the Apache Software Foundation. Initially created by Jahia Solutions Group in 2015, the project entered the Apache Incubator program and became a Top-Level Project in 2020. It functions as a Java-based server designed to collect and manage customer, lead, and visitor data from various sources to create unified, 360-degree customer profiles. The platform serves businesses that need to consolidate customer data to personalize user experiences across different digital channels, such as websites, mobile applications, and CRMs.

The core of Unomi's offering is a REST server that tracks user interactions and progressively builds customer profiles, which can be done without collecting personally identifiable information (PII). It provides features like real-time data processing, segmentation, lead scoring, and rule-based personalization. This allows organizations to tailor content, recommendations, and marketing campaigns to specific audience segments. The system is built on technologies like ElasticSearch for data storage and Apache Karaf, which allows for a modular and scalable architecture. This design enables developers to extend its functionality by creating custom plugins.

A key differentiator for Apache Unomi is its strong emphasis on data privacy and consent management, aligning with regulations such as GDPR. It includes a privacy REST API that allows for the development of user-facing interfaces where end-users can manage their data, control tracking, and even request anonymization or complete deletion of their profiles. The platform is the reference implementation for the OASIS Customer Data Platform (CDP) standard, which aims to standardize personalized customer experiences while promoting ethical data management. Although Apache Unomi itself is free to use under the Apache License 2.0, deploying and maintaining it involves costs related to infrastructure and technical expertise.
