About Unity Semiconductor
Unity Semiconductor Corporation operated as a development-stage company focused on next-generation non-volatile memory technology. Founded in 2002 by Darrell Rinerson, a former executive at Micron Technology and Advanced Micro Devices, the company was established to create a replacement for the dominant NAND flash memory market. Based in Sunnyvale, California, Unity Semiconductor spent nearly a decade developing its proprietary Conductive Metal Oxide (CMOx) technology.
The company's business model evolved from initially planning to design, develop, and manufacture memory products to a strategy based on licensing its intellectual property. This shift positioned Unity to partner with major semiconductor companies by providing its technology and production expertise. The firm targeted the expansive market for flash memory in electronic devices, which was valued at over $20 billion during its operational years. Unity Semiconductor secured significant venture capital, with its Series C round in 2009 bringing total funding to nearly $75 million from investors including August Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Morgenthaler Ventures.
Unity's core product was its CMOx technology, a novel solid-state memory designed to overcome the scaling limitations of traditional NAND. CMOx was a form of resistive RAM (ReRAM) based on the movement of oxygen ions within conductive metal oxide materials, which enabled a change in resistance to store data. This approach allowed for a multi-layer, cross-point memory array architecture without requiring a transistor in each cell. The key benefits promised by CMOx included higher storage density, faster write performance, lower manufacturing costs, and improved data reliability compared to NAND flash.
In January 2011, the company appointed a new leadership team to spearhead commercialization, with David Eggleston named Chief Executive Officer. Despite its technological developments and substantial patent portfolio, the company faced challenges in bringing a product to market. Ultimately, in February 2012, Unity Semiconductor was acquired by Rambus Inc. for $35 million in cash. The acquisition saw the Unity team integrated into Rambus to continue the development of non-volatile memory solutions.
