Unique Solutions Design
Canada-based developer of innovative body fit solutions and technologies
About Unique Solutions Design
Unique Solutions Design Ltd., founded in 1994 by Tanya Shaw, began by offering custom-fit sewing patterns. Shaw, a graduate of Dalhousie University's Costume Studies program, leveraged her background to address individual apparel fit. The company transitioned into a technology-focused enterprise, developing 3-D body imaging and data capture solutions.
A significant milestone was the 2002 introduction of the UniqueScan body scanning system, which used white light technology to capture over 200,000 body measurement points. The firm expanded its technological capabilities in 2009 by acquiring its competitor, Intellifit Corporation. This acquisition brought in radio wave-based scanning technology, notable for its ability to scan a fully clothed person, a feature integrated into what became the Intellifit® Plus system. This strategic move solidified Unique Solutions' position in fit technologies by combining its comprehensive back-end software with Intellifit's scanning hardware.
The company's business model centered on leveraging its body measurement database, considered the largest of its kind, to serve both consumers and businesses. For consumers, it launched a direct-to-consumer initiative under the “Me-Ality” (Measured Reality) brand in 2011, installing Size-Matching Stations in major U.S. shopping malls. These kiosks provided shoppers with personalized size recommendations for various apparel brands, aiming to reduce returns and improve customer satisfaction. For businesses, primarily apparel manufacturers and retailers, Unique Solutions provided data and insights to optimize sizing and fit for their products. Revenue was expected from retailers and brands for customer referrals generated by the scanners. The company attracted significant investment, including a $30 million infusion in 2011 from Northwater Capital to expand its mall kiosk network. However, after various strategic shifts, including rebranding as MeID and leadership changes, Unique Solutions ceased operations in August 2016.
