In 2000, a new company called Underground Solutions, Inc. was founded with a focus on a critical, yet often overlooked, part of civil infrastructure: water and sewer pipelines. The company developed and patented a technology for fusible PVC pipes. This innovation allowed for the creation of a seamless, leak-free pipeline system, ideal for trenchless installation methods that avoided the massive disruption of digging up streets. The core of their business was providing these advanced pipeline solutions for water, sewer, and conduit applications. Their proprietary Fusible PVC® offered a distinct advantage for rehabilitating aging and failing pressure pipelines, a growing problem for municipalities across North America. By focusing on this niche, the company established itself as a leader in trenchless pipeline renewal, creating more effective and less disruptive alternatives to traditional replacement methods. By early 2016, the company's unique technology and market position had attracted a strategic buyer. Aegion Corporation, a leader in infrastructure protection, saw a perfect complement to its existing portfolio. In February 2016, Aegion announced it had acquired Underground Solutions for approximately $85 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Aegion to significantly expand its presence in the pressure pipe rehabilitation market, combining its scale with the innovative PVC technology that Underground Solutions had pioneered.
