About UGOBE

UGOBE, Inc. was a consumer robotics company that entered the market with a focus on creating emotionally engaging, life-like animatronic toys. The company was founded in 2006 by Caleb Chung, Bob Christopher, and John Sosoka. Chung, the inventor behind the wildly successful Furby, brought a rich background in toy design, special effects, and entertainment to the venture. His journey included work for Mattel, designing special effects for films, and even a career as a mime and comedian, all of which informed his approach to creating toys that could form an emotional bond with their owners. Christopher, who served as CEO, provided the business leadership, securing $20.5 million in funding over two rounds from investors including First Round Capital and Hyield Venture Capital.

The company’s flagship and sole product was Pleo, a robotic baby Camarasaurus dinosaur designed to emulate the appearance and behavior of a one-week-old specimen. Retailing for approximately $349, Pleo was not marketed as a simple robot but as a "Life Form" that could develop a unique personality over time. Pleo's design incorporated a complex array of technology to achieve its life-like qualities. It was equipped with 14 motors, over 30 sensors for sight, sound, and touch, a camera for navigation, dual microphones, and multiple microprocessors to coordinate its movements and reactions. This hardware allowed Pleo to exhibit a range of behaviors and emotions; it could walk, explore its environment, react to being petted, and even express moods like hunger or fear. The robot's behavior evolved through stages, starting with a 10-minute "birth" phase and progressing to a permanent juvenile state. Owners could further customize their Pleo through software updates and new behaviors downloaded via a USB port and an SD card slot.

UGOBE's business model was centered on the direct-to-consumer sale of the Pleo robot. The company targeted both children and adults who were fascinated by robotics and sought a pet-like interactive experience without the responsibilities of a live animal. Despite selling around 100,000 units in 2008 and garnering significant media attention, the company faced substantial challenges. The high price point was a barrier for many consumers, and technical issues such as short battery life and noisy motors were common criticisms. Ultimately, the global financial crisis severely impacted the company, as credit freezes prevented its retail partners from paying for large orders. This led to UGOBE laying off all its employees and filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2009, leading to its liquidation. Following the bankruptcy, the Pleo intellectual property was acquired by Jetta Company Limited, which continued its production under a new subsidiary, Innvo Labs.
