About Ubidyne
Ubidyne, founded in Ulm, Germany, in 2005, operated as a key developer of antenna-embedded digital radio systems for the wireless communications industry. The company was co-founded by Dr. Clemens Rheinfelder, who served as the Chief Technology Officer. Ubidyne's core business centered on manufacturing active antenna systems designed to disrupt the traditional, analog-based infrastructure of mobile communication networks. Its primary clients were global mobile network operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The firm's flagship product was its Antenna Embedded Radio technology, which integrated a digital radio frequency unit directly into the antenna housing. This all-digital system was engineered to be standards-agnostic, ensuring compatibility with various generations of mobile communication standards. A significant benefit of this technology was the elimination of bulky coaxial feeder cables and tower-mounted amplifiers, which streamlined network deployment. By integrating these components, Ubidyne's solution aimed to reduce capital and operational expenditures for network operators, lower energy consumption, and simultaneously enhance radio performance, network coverage, and capacity.
Throughout its operation, Ubidyne secured significant venture capital, raising a total of $48.8 million over two funding rounds from investors including Gimv, DH Private Equity Partners, and TVM Capital. A major milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Kathrein Group on June 1, 2013. Following the acquisition, the business unit, including its development capabilities and a large portion of its staff, was reorganized and continued under the name Kathrein net.tech GmbH. Later, in 2019, Ericsson acquired Kathrein's antenna and filter division, absorbing these assets and expertise into its own radio systems portfolio.
