About TuneUp

TuneUp Media was established in 2007 by founder Gabe Adiv. The idea for the company stemmed from Adiv's personal frustrations with his disorganized digital music library, which was plagued with duplicate songs, missing cover art, and untitled tracks. Unable to find a user-friendly solution, he was inspired to create one. Before starting TuneUp Media, Adiv spent five years in sales and channel marketing at Gracenote, which provided him with relevant industry experience.

The company provided digital music management and discovery services, operating as a plugin for iTunes and Windows Media Player. Its primary function was to help users clean and organize their music libraries. The software offered several key features to address common library issues. One core function was to fix mislabeled song information, such as generic titles like "Track 01," by using acoustic fingerprinting technology to identify and correct the metadata. It also specialized in finding and adding missing album artwork to complete the visual aspect of a music collection. Another significant tool was the "DeDuper," which scanned for and helped remove duplicate tracks, freeing up storage space.

Beyond organization, TuneUp Media incorporated music discovery elements through its "Tuniverse" feature. This provided users with concert alerts, artist biographies, and music videos. The business model was based on a subscription service; users could initially clean a limited number of songs and find a certain amount of album covers for free before needing to subscribe for continued access. The company secured venture capital funding, including a Series A round of $1.23 million in August 2007 and a Series B round of $1.2 million in July 2008. In March 2014, the company was acquired or merged. Sometime after the acquisition, TuneUp Media ceased trading, reportedly without notice, which was speculated to be related to Gracenote, the service it used for song matching, being sold to a new owner.
