Tribe

Tribe.net was an early social networking website founded in 2003 by Mark Pincus, Paul Martino, and Valerie Syme. The platform was designed to allow users to create online communities, or "tribes," based on shared interests and connections, aiming to be a socially-networked version of Craigslist. Initially, its user base was concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area but gradually expanded, reaching over 500,000 members by September 2006.

Mark Pincus, who later founded the social gaming company Zynga, served as CEO of Tribe.net. His background includes a degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and founding several other tech companies like Freeloader, Inc. and Support.com. The company secured partnerships with Knight Ridder Digital and The Washington Post and raised $3.1 million in funding.

The platform allowed any registered user to create a "tribe," which functioned as a topical forum, and connect with friends or invite new members. In 2007, Cisco Systems acquired the technology assets of Tribe.net to develop its own social networking platforms for corporate clients, though the Tribe.net website remained independent. The original company, Tribe Networks, became insolvent and Pincus formed a new corporation, Utah Street Networks, to buy the assets and continue operating the site. In 2008, management was turned over to a user group, New Systems Associates, with the goal of rewriting the software to avoid licensing fees from Cisco.

Tribe.net faced several challenges, including a controversial 2005 decision to ban sexually explicit content, which alienated a portion of its user base known for a permissive content policy. The site struggled to define its business model and retain users, who eventually migrated to other platforms like Facebook. The original website was taken offline in March 2017. As of February 2023, the domain hosts a Mastodon server, aiming to keep the spirit of the original site alive by offering a decentralized social media experience.
