About TransMolecular

TransMolecular, Inc. was a biotechnology firm founded in 1996, focused on creating targeted therapies for cancers like glioma and metastatic brain tumors. The company's core technology was a tumor-targeting platform centered on TM601, a synthetic polypeptide derived from scorpion venom. This peptide was engineered to selectively bind to and be internalized by malignant cells, which often overexpress the annexin A2 complex on their surface, thus sparing normal cells.

The platform was designed to deliver various conjugated agents—such as radioisotopes, chemotoxins, and nanoparticles—directly to tumors, even those within the central nervous system, by crossing the blood-brain barrier. A lead candidate, TM601 combined with the radioisotope 131I, received a Special Protocol Agreement from the FDA for a Phase 3 trial in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme. E. Michael Egan, who had a background in business development and laboratory management, including at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, served as the company's President and CEO.

Over its existence, TransMolecular raised significant capital, amounting to over $51 million, to fund its research and development pipeline. In March 2011, the company's tumor-targeting assets were acquired by Morphotek, a subsidiary of the Japanese pharmaceutical company Eisai Co., Ltd. The acquisition gave Morphotek and Eisai exclusive ownership of the tumor-targeting peptide technology for both therapeutic and diagnostic applications, with plans to develop new treatments for a variety of cancers.
