Tower Cloud
Provides telecom backhaul services to wireless carriers
About Tower Cloud
Established in 2006 by Ronald Mudry, Tower Cloud carved out a significant niche in the telecommunications infrastructure sector from its headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. The company specialized in providing high-capacity data transport services, focusing on the critical link between cell sites and the mobile switching centers of wireless carriers.
Tower Cloud's business model was centered on building and operating its own fiber optic and microwave networks to deliver backhaul services. This infrastructure was essential for wireless carriers to manage the escalating volume of voice and data traffic spurred by the rise of smartphones. The company's primary clients were national wireless carriers, which accounted for over 90% of its revenues, and enterprise customers. Its service portfolio included fiber-to-the-tower backhaul, the deployment of small cell networks, and providing dark fiber solutions.
A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in June 2016, when Communications Sales & Leasing (CS&L), a real estate investment trust spun off from Windstream, announced its definitive agreement to acquire Tower Cloud. The transaction, valued at $230 million in cash and stock, was finalized in the fourth quarter of 2016. Following the acquisition, CS&L merged Tower Cloud with another recent purchase, PEG Bandwidth, to create a new, unified fiber infrastructure group branded as Uniti Fiber. Ronald Mudry transitioned to lead this new entity as its President.
