About ToposWare
ToposWare, a blockchain research and engineering firm founded in 2018 by CEO Theo Gauthier, specializes in zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography. The company has established itself as a key player in developing solutions to enhance the privacy, scalability, and interoperability of blockchain networks. After a period of intensive in-house research and development, including the publication of several academic papers, ToposWare secured its first seed funding of $250,000 in July 2022. This was followed by a more substantial $5 million seed extension round in October 2023, led by Evolution Equity Partners and including participation from Triatomic Capital, K2 Access Fund, and Polygon's founder, Sandeep Nailwal. A significant milestone occurred in June 2024 when Polygon Labs acquired ToposWare to integrate its team and technology, a move that brought Polygon's total investment in ZK technology to over $1 billion.

ToposWare's core offering is the Topos Protocol, described as the first "zkEcosystem." This platform allows developers to deploy their own sovereign execution layers, known as "subnets," which can be blockchains or other systems capable of submitting Topos certificates. These subnets benefit from native interoperability and cryptographic security, enabling them to securely interact and compose value across the entire Topos ecosystem without compromising privacy. The company's business model is centered on providing this open-source infrastructure and enterprise services to a range of clients, from individual developers and Web3 projects to large enterprises. For enterprises, ToposWare addresses key adoption barriers by offering the privacy and interoperability needed to build on blockchain technology without exposing sensitive data.
A key technological achievement from ToposWare, in collaboration with Polygon, is the development of a highly efficient Type 1 ZK-EVM prover. This technology allows any Ethereum-compatible chain to become a ZK proof-based chain, enhancing security and enabling connection to interoperable networks like Polygon's AggLayer. The prover was designed to be cost-effective, capable of proving an Ethereum block for a total cost of about $0.534 at the time of its announcement. By building a custom EVM that traces execution and state changes, the system generates STARK proofs to validate all transactions, which are then aggregated into a single, succinct block proof. This focus on cryptographic research and engineering places ToposWare, now as part of Polygon Labs, at the forefront of advancing new, open internet standards.
