About TokoTalk

TokoTalk operated as an e-commerce enabler in Indonesia, providing a platform for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, to establish and manage their online stores. The company was founded in March 2018 by the South Korean technology firm Codebrick, which was led by CEO Kyung-min Bang, CBO Jinmahn Hong, and CPO Jaeyeon Noh. The inception of TokoTalk was a direct response to the prevalent consumer behavior in Indonesia, where a significant portion of online shopping occurred through chat applications. Its name, a combination of "toko" (Indonesian for "shop") and "talk", reflected its origins as a chatbot-based e-commerce service that simulated a conversational shopping experience.

The firm's business model was centered on providing a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for social commerce. Clients, primarily online sellers active on social media platforms like Instagram and messaging apps like WhatsApp, could use TokoTalk to create a dedicated website, manage orders, track payments, integrate with multiple courier services, and utilize marketing tools. The platform was designed to simplify the complexities of online selling, offering features such as inventory management, automated payment confirmation, and integration with Facebook Pixel for ad targeting. Revenue was generated through tiered subscription packages, including a basic free plan and premium options with advanced features. On April 25, 2019, TokoTalk secured US$3.2 million in a Series A funding round led by Altos Ventures, with participation from Access Ventures. This capital was aimed at enhancing platform features, particularly payment security and marketing tools.

Despite showing initial growth and acquiring a substantial user base, TokoTalk announced it would be ceasing operations on October 28, 2022. The company provided a transition period for its merchants to back up data and migrate to other platforms, with backend support continuing until November 14, 2022. While no specific reason for the shutdown was publicly stated, the closure marked the end of its four-year journey in attempting to streamline social commerce within the Indonesian market.
