TokBox emerged in 2007, founded by Carlos Guestrin and Serge Faguet, initially launching as a consumer-facing video chat and messaging platform. Guestrin, at the time, was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University with a background in machine learning. The company's trajectory shifted in 2010 when it pivoted from its consumer service to focus on a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) model with the introduction of its OpenTok API. The core of TokBox's business became the OpenTok platform, which was an early adopter and supporter of WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communications) technology. A significant milestone in TokBox's journey was its acquisition by Telefónica Digital in 2012, which provided the resources to further scale the OpenTok platform globally. Later, in 2018, the company was acquired by Vonage for $35 million. Under Vonage, the OpenTok technology has been integrated into the parent company's broader suite of programmable communication APIs, continuing to serve as a foundational element for building flexible and personal communication experiences within other businesses' applications and services.
