About TinyOwl

TinyOwl, a food technology venture, was established in Mumbai in 2014 by a group of five alumni from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay: Harshvardhan Mandad, Gaurav Choudhary, Saurabh Goyal, Shikhar Paliwal, and Tanuj Karia. The founders, coming from an engineering background, conceived the idea after experiencing the challenge of finding good food options late at night as students and during their subsequent corporate roles. They launched the company with initial seed funding and rapidly gained traction in the burgeoning Indian food delivery market.

The company's primary offering was a mobile application that aggregated restaurant menus, enabling users to order food for delivery. TinyOwl's business model centered on charging restaurants a commission fee for each order facilitated through its platform. A key feature of their service was a location-based interface that presented users with a curated list of nearby dining options, simplifying the selection process. The platform also included real-time order tracking, allowing customers to monitor the progress of their delivery from the restaurant to their doorstep.

Despite initial success and securing significant venture capital from investors like Sequoia Capital and Matrix Partners, TinyOwl faced intense competition and operational challenges. These difficulties led to a strategic merger with Runnr, another logistics and food delivery service, in 2016. This consolidation aimed to combine TinyOwl's restaurant aggregation platform with Runnr's established delivery fleet to create a more efficient and comprehensive service. The merged entity eventually was acquired by the food delivery giant Zomato in 2017, integrating its operations into Zomato's broader ecosystem.
