Enables indie brands and retailers to start an online store to sell their products online MoreLess
Tictail operated as a social e-commerce platform and marketplace, targeting emerging independent brands and designers in fashion, home decor, and art. Founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2011 by Carl Waldekranz, Kaj Drobin, Siavash Ghorbani, and Birk Nilsson, the company aimed to simplify online selling for small businesses without requiring technical expertise. The founding vision, often dubbed "the Tumblr of e-commerce," was inspired by CEO Carl Waldekranz's observation of his mother's struggles to sell her ceramics online. This personal experience fueled the creation of a platform focused on ease of use, customizable storefronts, and strong community features. Waldekranz and Drobin had previously collaborated on a digital agency, Super Strikers, which worked with notable tech companies like Spotify, and later co-founded Keyflow, a guest list app. Ghorbani brought experience from being the tech lead at Blocket, Sweden's largest classified ads site.
The business model centered on a dual offering. For merchants, Tictail provided a DIY e-commerce tool to create a free, standalone online store, with options to purchase apps for additional functionality like discount codes or to subscribe to a paid tier for premium features. For shoppers, it was a global marketplace to discover and purchase goods from a curated selection of brands from over 140 countries. Revenue was primarily generated through a commission on sales made through the marketplace and fees for premium apps and services for the individual storefronts. The platform's key features included mobile-first store creation, allowing a business to be set up entirely from a phone, and direct messaging between shoppers and brands to foster relationships. A significant milestone was the opening of Tictail Market, a physical retail store in Manhattan's Lower East Side in January 2016, which served as a physical showroom for the online marketplace.
After raising nearly $33 million in funding, Tictail was acquired by Shopify in November 2018. The acquisition was part of Shopify's strategy to enhance its offerings with new talent and technology and expand its international presence. Following the acquisition, the Tictail platform was gradually phased out, and operations ceased on April 1, 2019, with merchants given the option to migrate to the Shopify platform. The deal also led to the closure of the New York brick-and-mortar store.
