About The Icon League

The Icon League is a German indoor 5-a-side football league that combines professional sports with digital entertainment, targeting younger, streaming-first audiences. Founded in 2024 by former professional footballer Toni Kroos and prominent German digital creator and streamer Elias Nerlich (eliasn97), the league was officially announced in November 2023 and held its first matchday on September 1, 2024, in Cologne's Lanxess Arena. The project is backed by entities such as the athlete agency Sports360, the record label TwoSides, and the creator management agency RABONA.

The business operates on a US-style franchise model with 14 teams, each led by well-known figures from football, entertainment, and social media, such as Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Franck Ribéry. This structure allows franchises to market themselves and their athletes independently, creating their own revenue streams. The league's primary revenue comes from ticketing for live events, sponsorships, media rights, and merchandise. Several franchise teams have reportedly achieved six-figure profits since the first season.

The gameplay is designed to be fast-paced and high-scoring to maximize viewer engagement. Matches consist of two 12-minute halves on a 45x22 meter artificial pitch with boards and no offside rule. To add unpredictability, games feature unique "Rulebreaker" moments, such as a shot clock, goals counting double, or a player being temporarily removed after being nutmegged ("tunnel"). If a match ends in a draw, it is decided by a golden goal overtime or a penalty shootout. The season culminates in a playoff tournament for a prize pool, with the champion receiving €300,000 out of a total €500,000.

Primarily streamed on Twitch and Pluto TV, the league has successfully captured a large digital audience, with matchdays drawing up to 3 million viewers across platforms and live events selling out arenas with up to 20,000 spectators. In November 2025, The Icon League raised €15 million in a Series A funding round led by HV Capital to professionalize operations and fuel European expansion. Notable investors include the family offices of football manager Jürgen Klopp and Luigi Berlusconi. David Fischer, formerly of HV Capital, was appointed CEO to lead this next growth phase.
