Building a flying taxi for 10X faster commute in cities MoreLess

The ePlane Company is an Indian aerospace firm focused on the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market, aiming to alleviate urban traffic congestion. It was founded in 2019 by Professor Satya Chakravarthy and Pranjal Mehta and incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. Chakravarthy, a professor of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Madras with a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, brings extensive expertise in propulsion and combustion, and has co-founded several other deep-tech startups, including AgniKul Cosmos and GalaxEye Space. His vision is to make flying ubiquitous.

The company is developing electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft for both passenger and cargo transport. Its flagship product is the ePlane e200x, a two-seater electric air taxi designed for intra-city travel, promising commutes up to seven times faster than ground transport. The aircraft features a compact 8-meter wingspan, enabling it to operate from rooftops without extensive infrastructure. It is designed for a range of up to 110-200 km and cruise speeds of 150-175 km/h. A key design feature is its proprietary "synergistic lift" technology, which enhances stability and efficiency during forward flight. Initially, the aircraft will be piloted, with plans for autonomous operation as regulations evolve.

The business model encompasses direct sales, leasing, and a franchise-based mobility-as-a-service operation. The company targets several client segments, including helicopter taxi service providers, high-net-worth individuals for initial sales, and eventually the broader public for an air taxi service. For its cargo operations, The ePlane Company established a subsidiary, Amber Wings, which commercializes drone technology for logistics, surveillance, and mapping. This division produces drones like the 'Atva' (formerly e6) with a 6kg payload capacity and the 'e50' with a 50kg capacity.

The ePlane Company has achieved significant milestones, including becoming the first private Indian company to receive a Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for an electric aircraft. As of late 2024, the company had raised a total of $21.5 million over seven funding rounds, with its Series B round securing $14 million to advance regulatory certifications and commercialization. The company is preparing for a full-scale prototype of the e200x to begin flight testing in mid-2025, with a goal of achieving type certification by the end of 2026 and launching services.
