Tendril
Provides a cloud platform to energy service providers for their energy management applications
About Tendril
Founded in 2004, Tendril emerged as a key player in the energy software sector, focusing on enhancing the relationship between energy providers and consumers through data analytics. The company was co-founded by Tim Enwall, with Adrian Tuck joining as CEO in 2006, bringing over two decades of leadership experience from the high-tech and wireless sensor network industries. Tuck, an entrepreneur educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was instrumental in shaping Tendril's strategic direction, focusing on an open platform to foster ecosystem development. After a period of rapid, venture-fueled expansion that led to over 50 concurrent utility projects, the leadership team undertook a significant restructuring around 2012 to concentrate on a more sustainable business model with a select group of utility partners.

In a significant strategic move in July 2019, Tendril merged with Simple Energy and other acquired firms like EEme, EnergySavvy, and FirstFuel to form a new entity, Uplight. This merger, backed by Rubicon Technology Partners and a $53 million investment from AES, created a comprehensive provider of customer-centric technology solutions for the energy ecosystem. Adrian Tuck assumed the role of CEO for the newly formed Uplight. The business operates by providing a suite of software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions to electric and gas utilities. These solutions leverage data science and analytics to deliver personalized energy experiences, aiming to help utilities acquire, engage, and activate their residential and business customers. The platform provides an end-to-end energy action system, including utility-branded marketplaces, demand-side management, and analytics to improve energy efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Tendril's core product, which evolved into the Uplight platform, was designed to give both utilities and consumers a deeper understanding of energy usage. For utilities, it offered tools to manage load, improve operational efficiency, and meet regulatory requirements. For consumers, it provided information and control to reduce consumption. The platform's features include personalized home energy reports, alerts, and access to marketplaces for energy-efficient devices. By integrating with smart home devices and existing utility back-office systems, the platform facilitates a dialogue between the provider and the end-user, enabling programs like demand response and targeted energy-saving incentives. Before the merger, Tendril served major utilities like Duke Energy, Exelon, and Xcel Energy, and the combined entity, Uplight, now serves over 75 utility partners, reaching 100 million customers.
