Telseon
Provider of internet infrastructure services that will run over optical networks in major metropolitan markets
About Telseon
Telseon, founded in 1999, operated as a provider of data transport and internet infrastructure services. Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, the company established itself as a metro-area managed optical network provider, deploying a Gigabit Ethernet optical network across major U.S. cities. This infrastructure was designed to alleviate the metropolitan bandwidth bottleneck that was impeding the growth of the internet economy at the time.
The company was co-founded by Vipin Jain and Mick Seaman, who served as the Chief Technical Officer. Telseon's business model focused on offering scalable bandwidth solutions to a diverse client base that included service providers, internet data centers, and enterprise businesses. A key aspect of their service was providing customers with direct control over their network bandwidth provisioning, allowing them to dynamically adjust their network capacity in minutes. This was achieved by utilizing Riverstone Networks' RS Switch Routers, which enabled connections at variable data rates up to 1 Gbps through a standard Ethernet interface. This approach eliminated the need for expensive, specialized Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) interfaces and the support staff required to manage them. The company's revenue model was based on a pay-for-use system, where customers only paid for the bandwidth they consumed.
Telseon's service offerings included optical network services, IP infrastructure, and various types of connections such as point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint. The company successfully raised a significant amount of capital, securing $200 million over three Series C funding rounds from notable institutional investors like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Sevin Rosen Funds. The first funding round occurred on May 2, 2000, raising $80M. Ultimately, Telseon was acquired by OnFiber Communications.
