About TelevisaUnivision

The story of TelevisaUnivision is one of two media giants running parallel paths before a landmark combination. In Mexico, Grupo Televisa was formally established in 1973 through the merger of Telesistema Mexicano and Televisión Independiente de México, led by Emilio Azcárraga Milmo. Its roots, however, trace back to Mexico's first television stations in the early 1950s, founded by his father, Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta. Meanwhile, in the United States, the seed for Univision was planted in 1962. It was founded as Spanish International Communications Corporation by a group including Rene Anselmo, Emilio Nicolas Sr., and Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta himself, linking several independent Spanish-language stations. This created the first Spanish-language television network in the U.S., initially serving as a key distribution channel for Televisa's content. Over the decades, both companies grew into media titans in their respective markets. Univision, after several ownership changes including a sale to Hallmark Cards in 1987, solidified its role as the leading Spanish-language network in the U.S. The truly transformative event occurred in April 2021, when it was announced that Televisa would merge its media and content assets with Univision. This $4.8 billion transaction, completed in January 2022, created a new, unified company: TelevisaUnivision Inc., the world's largest Spanish-language media company.
