About Techwell
In 1997, founder Hiro Kozato started Techwell with a simple but challenging idea: to create a single chip that could merge a PC monitor and a television screen. Joined shortly after by Feng Kuo, who would become CTO, the company entered the competitive semiconductor industry as a fabless designer of mixed-signal integrated circuits. While their initial PC/TV chip was innovative, the market became crowded, forcing a strategic pivot. The company shifted its focus to two burgeoning and underserved markets: automotive infotainment systems and security surveillance. This move proved to be the masterstroke. Techwell's chips, which enabled the conversion of analog video to digital, were perfectly positioned for the explosion in in-car LCD displays and digital video recorders (DVRs) for security. By solving this critical need, they became a dominant supplier in these niche, high-growth areas. This success led to a significant milestone in June 2006, when Techwell went public on the NASDAQ. The company's journey culminated on March 22, 2010, when it was acquired by the larger semiconductor firm Intersil for approximately $370 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Intersil to absorb Techwell's leadership position in the industrial video market, marking a successful exit for a company that found its fortune by pivoting to where the pixels were heading next.
