About TeamBuy

TeamBuy.ca emerged in October 2009 as a pioneering Canadian e-commerce platform in the group buying sector, founded in Toronto by Edward Yao, Andrew Hutchings, Matthew Morris, and Ghassan Halazon. The company capitalized on the "tuangou" concept, a Chinese group-buying model, to secure substantial discounts for its members, often ranging from 50% to 90% off the regular price. One of the founders, Edward Yao, began his career at Accenture as a management consultant after graduating from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Commerce. This background in business and finance likely contributed to the strategic direction of TeamBuy. His co-founder, Omar Sahyoun, also had a strong entrepreneurial drive, later co-founding Dealfind.

The business operated primarily as a daily deal site, offering a new discounted product or service each day to its subscribers. This model attracted a large consumer base by providing access to deals on local services, products, and travel. The company made money by taking a commission from the merchants for each deal sold through its platform. Its clients were small and medium-sized local businesses, including restaurants, spas, and entertainment venues, looking to attract new customers. Initially appearing on the TV show Dragons' Den, where they received investment offers, the company demonstrated early promise. Over the years, TeamBuy secured significant funding, including a $7 million Series A round in July 2011 and a subsequent $5 million round in February 2012, to fuel its expansion across Canada.

TeamBuy evolved from a simple deal-a-day site into a broader e-commerce destination. It expanded its offerings to include multiple categories like home and decor, fashion, electronics, and travel, featuring thousands of deals simultaneously. The platform also developed mobile and Facebook e-commerce apps to enhance user experience and accessibility. A significant milestone was the 2013 merger with its Canadian rival, Dealfind.com, creating the largest independent daily deal company in the country with a combined user base of over 3.5 million members. Following the merger, Ghassan Halazon continued as CEO of the unified entity. In 2014, the company, along with its parent at the time, Couch Commerce, faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy protection. Shortly after, TeamBuy was acquired by the U.S.-based e-commerce portfolio player NC Commerce Inc. This led to the departure of CEO Ghassan Halazon and other key executives.
