About Tatara Systems

Established in 2001 by co-founders Hong Jiang and Kevin Jackson, Tatara Systems carved out a specific niche within the telecommunications sector from its headquarters in Acton, Massachusetts. The company focused on developing convergence products aimed at mobile operators and service providers, specifically within the fixed-mobile convergence and personal computer convergence markets. This strategy addressed the growing need for a unified set of IP services that could function seamlessly across both traditional wired and emerging wireless networks.

Tatara Systems' core business was providing Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based mobile telephony convergence solutions. Its product line was engineered to allow for smoother integration into the core networks of mobile carriers. The offerings included the Tatara Convergence Server, which was built on a SIP-based architecture supporting both CDMA and UMTS standards. The company also developed a subscriber gateway that worked in conjunction with client-side software on a user's mobile device to manage authentication, billing, and services.

The company's business model revolved around selling tweedeze infrastructure and software to large-scale mobile operators. Over its operational history, Tatara Systems successfully raised a total of $50.5 million in capital over seven funding rounds from notable venture capital firms such as Highland Capital Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners. In May 2006, Tatara Systems made a strategic move by acquiring Xybec Solutions. The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by Taqua Systems on July 21, 2011, marking its exit from the market as an independent entity.
