About Tapzo

Tapzo, originally launched as Akosha in 2010, was a Bengaluru-based technology firm that underwent several strategic transformations before its eventual acquisition. Founded by Ankur Singla, a former corporate lawyer, along with co-founders Vishal Pal Chaudhary, Avinash Vankadaru, Vishrut Chalsani, and Asha Rani, the company initially began as a platform for managing customer complaints. This business model later evolved, leading to a rebranding in 2015 as Helpchat, a personal assistant service based on a chat interface. Recognizing limitations in the chat model for transactional services, the company pivoted again in 2016 to become Tapzo.

As Tapzo, the firm operated as an all-in-one app aggregator, a concept designed to reduce the clutter of multiple applications on a user's smartphone. The platform integrated more than 35 distinct services, enabling users to perform a wide array of activities from a single interface. These services included booking cabs from providers like Ola and Uber, ordering food from Zomato and Swiggy, paying utility bills, and recharging mobile phones, all without navigating away from the Tapzo app. This integrated transactional experience was a key aspect of its user value proposition. The company's revenue was primarily generated through a commission-based model, earning a percentage, typically between 4% and 11%, on each transaction facilitated through its partner services.

Despite attracting over 5 million users and securing approximately $38.7 million in funding from investors such as Sequoia Capital and American Express Ventures, Tapzo faced significant challenges in a competitive market that demanded substantial capital for growth. In August 2018, Amazon Pay acquired Tapzo in a deal valued at around $40 million. The acquisition was seen as a strategic move for Amazon to accelerate its entry into various service categories like travel and bill payments and to bolster its own digital payment ambitions in India. Following the acquisition, the Tapzo app was shut down in October 2018, and the founding team was integrated into Amazon Pay to help build out its platform.
