eCommerce & Marketplaces · San Francisco, United States · Founded 2011

Order with a tap & pick it up...or get it delivered straight to your mouth (almost) MoreLess

Tapingo was a mobile commerce application specifically tailored for the college campus market, offering advance ordering for pickup and food delivery services. Founded in 2012 by Daniel Almog and Udi Oster, the company established its headquarters in San Francisco, California, while also maintaining offices in Tel Aviv, Israel. The founders, who met during their service in the Israeli Defense Forces' elite signal intelligence Unit 8200, leveraged their background in data and pattern recognition to build the company's technology.

The company's business model centered on providing a convenient way for college students to order from on- and off-campus eateries. Tapingo's platform was custom-designed for the campus environment, featuring direct integration with university meal plans and point-of-sale (POS) systems. This integration allowed students to use their meal dollars for purchases and provided them with transparent, up-to-the-minute wait times. For merchant partners, including major brands like Chipotle, Taco Bell, and Aramark, the platform streamlined operations and increased order volume. Revenue was generated by facilitating tens of thousands of daily transactions for its user base of over half a million active diners.

Initially launched on five U.S. campuses in 2012, Tapingo rapidly expanded its footprint. By the time of its acquisition, the platform was active on over 150 college campuses across the United States and Canada. A significant milestone in the company's history occurred in September 2018, when Grubhub announced its definitive agreement to acquire Tapingo for approximately $150 million in cash. The acquisition was completed in November 2018, with Tapingo's technology and campus network being integrated into Grubhub's broader marketplace to capture the student demographic and foster long-term customer loyalty.
