About takealot.com

Takealot.com is a South African e-commerce company positioned as an online retailer and marketplace for a wide array of consumer products. The business primarily serves consumers (B2C) within South Africa, with a strategic focus on major metropolitan areas in provinces like Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

The company's history began in October 2010 when Kim Reid, a former executive at Naspers subsidiary MIH Group, partnered with the U.S.-based investment firm Tiger Global Management to acquire an existing online retailer called Take2. Reid, a chartered accountant with a background as CFO at MultiChoice and CEO at MWEB, leveraged his experience in South Africa's internet and e-commerce sectors to spearhead this new venture. The rebranded Takealot.com was officially launched in June 2011 with the vision of becoming the most customer-centric online shopping destination in Africa.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2014, a year marked by significant expansion. Takealot received a $100 million investment from Tiger Global, which fueled strategic acquisitions. The company purchased Mr Delivery, which provided a crucial in-house logistics network that was later branded as the Takealot Delivery Team, and also expanded into on-demand food delivery with Mr D Food. That same year, Takealot acquired the fashion e-tailer Superbalist.com and announced a merger with its primary competitor, the Naspers-owned Kalahari.com. This merger was finalized in May 2015, consolidating Takealot's market leadership. Subsequently, Naspers steadily increased its stake, becoming the majority shareholder in 2017 and owning 96% of the company by 2018.

Takealot operates a dual revenue model. It generates income through the direct sale of products held in its own inventory and also earns commission from over 10,000 third-party sellers who use its marketplace platform to reach a broad customer base. The platform offers an extensive selection across more than 21 departments, including electronics, lifestyle, fashion, and home goods. A key component of its value proposition is its robust logistics and fulfillment infrastructure, comprising large distribution centers and a network of drivers, which enables efficient and reliable delivery services, including same-day and next-day options in major cities. The company has also established numerous pickup points across all nine provinces for added customer convenience.
