Symphony Commerce - Commerce as a Service MoreLess

Symphony Commerce was a San Francisco-based firm founded in 2011 by Harish Abbott and Henry Kim, which provided an enterprise-level, on-demand commerce infrastructure. The founders leveraged their experience from Amazon's fulfillment and ordering systems to build the company. Abbott, an alumnus of Stanford's Graduate School of Business with a background at Amazon, co-founded the venture to offer a comprehensive backend solution for brands. The company's core offering was a 'Commerce as a Service' (CaaS) cloud platform that managed the entire e-commerce lifecycle, including multi-channel storefronts, order and inventory management, and fulfillment orchestration.

The business model was designed to liberate brands from the complexities of managing their own e-commerce infrastructure, allowing them to concentrate on product design and brand development. Symphony Commerce provided an integrated solution encompassing the web store, backend logistics, and marketing services, operating on a pay-per-use basis. This end-to-end service catered to mid-sized and enterprise brands, particularly in the Fashion & Apparel, CPG, and Durables sectors. The platform's ability to handle both direct-to-consumer and business-to-business commerce on a single, enterprise-class system was a key feature.

The company secured significant financial backing, raising a total of $59.1 million across several funding rounds from prominent investors such as Bain Capital Ventures, FirstMark Capital, and Charles River Ventures. A notable achievement was being named the Shop.org Digital Commerce Start-Up of the Year in 2015. In May 2018, Symphony Commerce was acquired by Quantum Retail Technology, an affiliate of the private enterprise software holding company ESW Capital. Following the acquisition, the company was integrated into Quantum's operations and is now considered defunct.
