In 1974, a company then known as Southern Waste Services, Inc. was founded. Over the next few decades, it grew from a small, family-owned business into a significant player in the environmental services industry. A key figure in this transformation was Jim Weber, who led the company for 30 years and helped establish it as a nationally-recognized firm. The business focused on providing essential services like industrial waste management, hazardous material cleanup, and emergency spill response to a wide range of sectors, including energy, transportation, and government. The company, which became SWS Environmental Services, expanded its footprint significantly over the years. By 2016, it operated from 29 locations across the eastern United States. This period of growth was marked by a strategic focus on expanding its capabilities to handle everything from routine environmental challenges to extreme emergencies. A pivotal event in the company's journey occurred in May 2018, when SWS Environmental Services was acquired by National Response Corporation (NRC). At the time of the acquisition, SWS had 21 locations and employed over 250 people. The move was a strategic one for NRC, as it significantly expanded their national footprint with very little overlap in service areas, enhancing their ability to serve a broad client base across the U.S. and internationally.
