The company was co-founded in 2016 by Sofie Allert, a biotechnical engineer, and Angela Wulff, a professor in marine ecology. Their collaboration began in 2013, sparked by a shared interest in algae's industrial potential, particularly species that thrive in cold, dark climates. Allert's background in biotechnology and entrepreneurship complemented Wulff's decades of research into marine microalgae, including those discovered during polar expeditions.

The company's business model is centered on a circular production process. At its commercial facility in Kungshamn, Sweden, Swedish Algae Factory cultivates diatoms using nutrient-rich wastewater from a neighboring food producer, simultaneously cleaning the water and sequestering carbon dioxide. The harvested algae's primary value comes from extracting the silica shells to create Algica, while organic by-products are repurposed for biogas and eco-fertilizers.

The primary market for Algica is the personal care industry, where it is used in over 60 products globally. Its unique porous structure provides multifunctional benefits, including moisturizing, cleansing, anti-pollution, and UV-light blocking properties. Revenue is generated through the sale of Algica to cosmetic and skincare brands. Beyond personal care, the company is actively researching and testing Algica for other applications, such as enhancing the efficiency of solar panels, improving the capacity of lithium-ion batteries, and use in wound care.
