In 1986, long before "outsourcing" was a common business term, Dilip Vellodi founded Sutherland in Rochester, New York. After spending nearly a decade at Xerox, Vellodi identified a broader market need for the kind of efficient, outsourced customer and sales support he had helped develop internally. With this insight, he started Sutherland to provide process consulting focused on managing the entire customer lifecycle for other companies. Sutherland began by serving technology firms and expanded into the newly deregulated telecom sector, followed by financial services and healthcare. The privately-held company grew steadily and organically for years before making its first major international expansion into India in the early 2000s. This move marked the beginning of a significant global footprint that now spans multiple continents. A key turning point came through private equity involvement. In 2014, TPG Capital acquired a significant stake, a move that facilitated an exit for earlier investors like Oak Investment Partners and Standard Chartered Private Equity. Later, in a 2022 deal, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC, completed an acquisition of the company for an undisclosed amount. Throughout its journey, Sutherland has remained private, allowing it to focus on a long-term strategy of integrating digital solutions, AI, and analytics into its core business process outsourcing services.
