About SuperFlex

Seismic, formerly known as Superflex, is a company operating at the intersection of apparel and robotics, creating what it terms "Powered Clothing." The firm originated as a 2016 spin-off from SRI International, a renowned nonprofit research institute. The foundational technology was initially developed for a DARPA-funded program called 'Warrior Web,' which aimed to create a soft, flexible exosuit to reduce injury risk and enhance the endurance of soldiers carrying heavy loads. Recognizing the broader consumer applications, particularly for the aging population and individuals with mobility challenges, Rich Mahoney, who was the director of robotics at SRI International, co-founded and led Superflex as its CEO.

In August 2018, Superflex rebranded to Seismic and strategically acquired the intellectual property of Lumo Bodytech, a company specializing in motion science and posture-correcting devices. This acquisition was aimed at enhancing the suit's control algorithms with extensive data on body posture and movement. The company's business model centers on the design and production of these intelligent garments. Initially, the company raised $9.6 million in a Series A funding round in late 2016, led by Japanese venture capital group Global Brain, with participation from Horizons Ventures and Root Ventures. This capital was intended to transition the technology from a military prototype into a viable consumer product.

Seismic's core product is a line of powered clothing that integrates discreet robotics to function as an external layer of muscle. The apparel is designed to be worn comfortably as a base layer under everyday clothes and is made of lightweight, breathable materials. It features small, powerful motors, referred to as Flex-Drive™ electric muscles, which are aligned with the body's own muscles around the core, hips, and lower back. These motors provide targeted power assistance, adding up to 30 watts of power to each hip and the lower back, to support natural movements like standing up, sitting down, and extended standing. The system is equipped with a sensor matrix that automatically understands the wearer's movements and provides power accordingly, aiming to reduce muscle strain and fatigue. The product serves multiple markets, including wellness and mobility for an aging population to promote independence, as well as worker safety in industrial settings to prevent injuries from physically demanding tasks.
