About Sunrocket
Sunrocket was a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider that launched in 2004, founded by former MCI executives Joyce Dorris and Paul Erickson. The company entered the competitive telecommunications market by offering an inexpensive alternative to traditional phone services, allowing customers to make calls over a broadband internet connection.

The business model centered on an aggressive pricing strategy, most notably a flat-rate annual subscription of $199 for unlimited calls within the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. This approach proved popular, enabling the company to scale its customer base to approximately 200,000 subscribers by April 2007, positioning it as the second-largest standalone VoIP provider after Vonage at the time. Sunrocket operated its headquarters in Vienna, Virginia, and had a significant call center presence in Springfield, Missouri.
Despite its initial growth and raising around $80 million in venture capital, the company struggled with financial instability and could not achieve profitability. The highly competitive market, dominated by larger telecom and cable companies that could bundle services, created immense pressure. Internal turmoil became apparent when the founders, Dorris and Erickson, departed the company in February 2007. This was followed by executive firings and the resignation of the CFO in early July of the same year. On July 17, 2007, Sunrocket abruptly ceased all operations without prior notice to its customers, leaving them without service and with uncertainty regarding refunds for prepaid annual plans. The company was subsequently liquidated.
