Remote solar designs and installation services for home solar electric systems MoreLess

Sungevity is a residential solar electricity company with a complex history of acquisitions and restructuring. Founded in 2007 by Danny Kennedy, Andrew Birch, and Alec Guettel, the company was established in Oakland, California. Kennedy, an activist with a background at Greenpeace, and his co-founders aimed to simplify the process of going solar. The company initially set itself apart by developing a proprietary remote solar design tool, iQuote, which used satellite imagery to provide homeowners with price quotes and system designs without an in-person home visit.

The business operates by designing, arranging financing for, and managing the installation and maintenance of home solar systems. Its core service involves creating customized solar energy systems that include rooftop panels, inverters to convert power for home use, and solar meters for remote monitoring via a mobile app. The company's business model is asset-light, focusing on software, project management, and customer experience while utilizing a network of third-party providers for hardware and installation. Revenue is generated through several financing options offered to clients, including outright purchase, solar loans, solar leases, and Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs), which allow customers to install a system with little to no upfront cost and pay for the generated power.

Sungevity's journey has been marked by significant volatility. After a period of growth and international expansion into Australia and the Netherlands, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2017. The company's assets were acquired by private equity firm Northern Pacific Group for $50 million, which then created a new company named Solar Spectrum. This new entity, along with Horizon Solar Power, was later rebranded back to Sungevity in 2018. Following further financial difficulties and layoffs, Sungevity's assets were acquired by Pineapple Energy in November 2020. Under Pineapple Energy, the brand has been revitalized, now focusing its operations on providing residential solar systems exclusively to homeowners in California.
