Suiso
On-site microwave pyrolysis hydrogen and carbon black production
About Suiso
Suiso Limited is a Rotherham-based company developing industrial-scale, green hydrogen generators. Founded in 2021 by engineer and financier Stuart McKnight and serial entrepreneur Dr. SB Cha, whose father invented the company's microwave technology, Suiso aims to decarbonize the economy. The company has developed a patented, microwave-driven methane pyrolysis process to produce low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas or biogas. This process also captures carbon in the form of carbon black, a valuable byproduct used in manufacturing tires, batteries, and inks.
Suiso's business model centers on providing on-site hydrogen generation, which eliminates the high costs associated with distribution from large, centralized plants. The company plans to deploy shipping container-sized generators capable of producing 1,000 kilograms or more of hydrogen daily. This distributed generation model allows businesses such as hospitals, factories, warehouses, and hydrogen vehicle filling stations to adopt cleaner energy solutions more quickly and affordably. The technology is significantly more energy-efficient than electrolysis, using 80% less electrical energy, and produces 97% lower emissions than steam methane reforming.
In March 2024, Suiso raised £3 million in a funding round led by the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF), managed by Mercia Ventures, along with Mercia's EIS funds. This investment is intended to help scale up the technology and initiate a pilot project. The company was also a winner of the BEIS (Department for Business, Energy & Industry Strategy) Low Carbon H2 Supply scheme in 2023. In May 2025, the University of Sheffield's Energy Innovation Centre partnered with Suiso for a three-month pilot study to test and demonstrate the gas decarbonization technology.
